About Dr. Low Jin Rong

Dr. Low Jin Rong is a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Asian Healthcare Specialists. Prior to entering private practice, he served as a Consultant in the Glaucoma, and Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology Departments of SNEC and CGH, and as Clinical Assistant Professor within the SingHealth Duke-NUS Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Academic Clinical Programme.

Dr. Low’s clinical expertise spans glaucoma, cataract surgery, and comprehensive ophthalmology. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2011, followed by completion of the rigorous American Council for Graduate Medical Education – International (ACGME-I) accredited SingHealth Ophthalmology Residency Programme. He earned his Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) in 2017 and was awarded fellowships by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK) in 2018 and the Academy of Medicine, Singapore in 2019. He further sub-specialized in glaucoma through the SNEC Advanced Clinical Specialist Program and completed his Glaucoma Fellowship in 2021.

An award-winning educator, Dr. Low has received the NUS Junior Doctor Teaching Award (2018), the SNEC Outstanding Educator Award (2021), and the SingHealth Residency Outstanding Faculty Award (2023). He has held key academic leadership roles, including Deputy Director of Undergraduate Education at EYE ACP, Program Director of the Ophthalmology Program at Duke-NUS Medical School, and Adjunct Clinician Educator at SNEC. He spearheaded the development of the SNEC e-learning platform, upgraded the SNEC MCQ Bank, and led curriculum and learning objective revisions for the Duke-NUS Ophthalmology Program.

Dr. Low is actively involved in training optometrists and allied health professionals, contributing to the planning and development of the Advanced Diploma in Clinical Ophthalmology for Optometrists and the Optometry Residency Program. He serves as a committee member of the NUS Master of Medicine (MMed) in Ophthalmology Committee and examiner for FRCOphth, MMed, MBBS, and Optometry examinations. In clinical training, he mentors residents and fellows through wet labs and surgical theatres and is a key facilitator for the SNEC Basic and Advanced Ophthalmic Microsurgical Workshops. He also delivers lectures at foundational ophthalmic courses, including the Duke-NUS SNEC Basic Certificate Course for Ophthalmic Assistants and Technicians, and mentors medical students via the Singapore Ophthalmology Students’ Society (SOSS) Mentorship Programme.

Dr. Low was the Clinical Lead for the Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) Strategy at SNEC. He developed the institutional MIGS Guidelines, detailing indications and contraindications for various devices. He was among the first ophthalmologists globally, outside the U.S., to implant the iStent infinite (Glaukos), and participated in its clinical trial at SNEC. He was instrumental in implementing the iStent infinite, Hydrus Microstent, and Preserflo MicroShunt devices at CGH. A recognized key opinion leader in iStent implant surgery, he has also innovated new surgical techniques for Preserflo MicroShunt implantation, which he teaches through the SNEC MIGS Masterclass and other training programs.

Regionally, Dr. Low has managed complex glaucoma cases from countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, India, and Bangladesh. As an experienced cataract surgeon, he performs both routine and complex cataract surgeries and offers advanced intraocular lens (IOL) options—including multifocal, extended depth of focus (EDOF), and toric lenses—tailored to each patient’s visual needs.

His leadership extends beyond clinical and educational realms. In 2017, Dr. Low received the SingHealth Award for a Quality Improvement Project that enhanced the examination process for wheelchair-bound patients. He served as Chief Resident of SNEC and was a member of the SNEC Outpatient Committee (2019–2020), contributing to strategic planning and training development. From 2022 to 2023, as Clinical Director of the Pharmacy Department at SNEC, he led initiatives including the implementation of electronic prescriptions, optimization of home medication delivery, and streamlined approval processes for novel glaucoma therapies—enabling access to cutting-edge medications such as Omidenepag Isopropyl, Rho-kinase inhibitors, and preservative-free options.

Dr. Low is also active in research, with multiple publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences. He received the Japanese Ophthalmological Society International Young Investigator Award in 2021 and has been invited to speak at prestigious events such as the Asia-Pacific Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology Society Congress, Hong Kong Paediatric Ophthalmology Congress, Japanese Ophthalmological Society Annual Meeting, CUHK Glaucoma Webinar, All India Ophthalmological Society MIGS Global Webinar, APAO Congress, Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association Meeting, and GERSO Glaucoma Meeting. He is also Editor-in-Chief of The Ophthalmic Nursing and Allied Ophthalmic Personnel Handbook, a key educational resource for eye care professionals.

Deeply committed to public health and outreach, Dr. Low actively volunteers at community eye screening events and gives public talks on cataracts, glaucoma, and general eye care. He has been featured on Mediacorp Channel 8 and Capital 958 radio, and on the Ministry of Health’s social media platforms to promote eye health awareness.

Dr. Low remains dedicated to delivering comprehensive, evidence-based, and patient-centered care, with a strong focus on improving quality of life and visual outcomes for his patients.
