Why Early Detection is Essential
Early diagnosis is the most effective way to preserve your sight. Conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can progress silently. By the time symptoms become apparent, vision loss may be permanent. Regular, specialised screening allows for timely intervention, which can slow or halt disease progression and maintain your quality of life.

What is Included in the S$88 Screening?
Our comprehensive screening package is designed to provide a clear, detailed picture of your ocular health. The assessment includes:
Understanding Glaucoma, Cataracts and AMD
While all three can affect vision, they are distinct conditions with different causes and symptoms.
Glaucoma
Often called the "silent thief of sight”, glaucoma is typically caused by increased pressure inside the eye, damaging the optic nerve. It usually has no early symptoms. Peripheral vision is lost first, often going unnoticed until central vision is affected.
Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, leading to progressively blurred or dim vision. Symptoms may include glare, faded colours, and difficulty with night driving. It is a common part of ageing but can be effectively treated.
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the central part of the retina that provides sharp, straight-ahead vision. When the macula is damaged, it can cause blurred or distorted central vision, or even a dark spot in the middle of your visual field. Straight lines may appear wavy or bent, making everyday tasks such as reading and recognising faces more difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions
The entire process typically takes about 45 to 60 minutes. This includes the time needed for registration, the preliminary tests by our optometrists, and the consultation with Dr Low to review your results. If pupil dilation is required, you may need to wait an additional 15-20 minutes for the drops to take effect.
Most patients find the screening process straightforward and experience minimal discomfort. The eye drops used to dilate your pupils may cause temporary light sensitivity and blurred vision for a few hours afterwards, so we recommend arranging for someone to drive you home or wearing sunglasses for comfort.
Yes, please bring all pairs of glasses you currently use, including reading glasses and distance vision glasses. This helps us assess your visual needs accurately and determine if any changes have occurred.
If you wear soft contact lenses, we recommend removing them at least 24 hours before your appointment. For rigid gas permeable lenses, please discontinue use for at least one week prior to your screening. This helps ensure the most accurate measurements of your eye surface and prescription.
General health screenings are typically not claimable under Medisave. However, if you are diagnosed with a chronic condition like Glaucoma or require treatment for Cataracts during your visit, portions of your subsequent management or procedures may be claimable under the Chronic Disease Management Programme (CDMP) or Medisave, subject to CPF withdrawal limits and eligibility. Our clinic staff will be happy to advise you on the financial aspects based on your specific situation.
For most individuals over 40 with no known eye conditions, a comprehensive eye screening every 1 to 2 years is recommended. If you have risk factors such as high myopia, diabetes, or a family history of eye disease, Dr Low may advise more frequent reviews to monitor your eye health closely.
